The WhatsApp green tick, and why you probably do not need it
In short
The green tick is Official Business Account status, granted by Meta to businesses it judges notable — meaning widely covered in independent news media. It cannot be bought or earned by having a large customer list, and the overwhelming majority of applications are refused. It is also not required to send WhatsApp messages, and it is not what makes your business name appear in a customer's chat. A verified display name, which is a separate and much easier thing, is.

What people think it does
They think it is what puts the business name at the top of the chat instead of a phone number.
That is the display name, which every business on the WhatsApp Business Platform has. Once it is approved, customers see your business name whether or not they have saved your number — no green tick anywhere. That is the trust signal people are actually after, and it is a normal part of setup.
What the green tick actually is
Official Business Account status: Meta’s judgement that a brand is notable, assessed through independent coverage rather than size, revenue or how many customers you message.
In practice that means substantial recent coverage in credible news publications that you did not pay for and did not place. Press releases do not count. A paid feature does not count. A listing site does not count.
Most businesses, including profitable ones with tens of thousands of customers, do not meet this — and no amount of reapplying changes it.
What it does not do
- It is not required to send messages. Everything on the platform works without it.
- It does not raise your messaging limits. Those come from your quality rating and how many people you have messaged.
- It does not affect pricing.
- It does not make templates approve faster.
- It is not business verification. Proving your legal entity to Meta with documents is required, and it is routine.
The three things worth confusing it with
Business verification. Meta checks that a real registered business stands behind the account, using incorporation documents, a utility bill, a bank statement. Required, achievable, and what people mean about half the time they say “verification”.
Display name approval. Your business name as customers see it. Required, routine, and the actual source of the trust people want.
Official Business Account, the green tick. Discretionary, rare, and not needed for anything.
If you still want to try
Apply through Meta Business Manager once your account is in good standing. Then:
- Do not reapply repeatedly. It does not improve the odds.
- Coverage is the whole test. If a journalist at a real publication has not written about you unprompted, the answer will be no.
- Nothing anyone sells you changes this. Agencies offering guaranteed green ticks are selling display name approval under a misleading label, or selling nothing at all.
What actually builds trust in the chat
- An approved display name, so your name is what appears.
- A complete profile — description, address, website, hours.
- Messages people agreed to receive. A recognised name on an unwanted message is worse than an unknown number, not better.
- Answering fast. Inside the 24-hour window your first 1,000 replies a month are free, and nothing in a badge competes with a business that answers in four minutes.
